Biography

Carmen Morales Caselles is a researcher and associate professor at the Faculty of Marine and Environmental Sciences of the University of Cádiz (Spain), where she studies the distribution of marine litter and microplastics in the global ocean. Carmen has a PhD in Marine Sciences specialized in marine pollution and ecotoxicology, as well as an Erasmus Mundus Master’s degree in Coastal and Water Management. She spent several years working as an international consultant for the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission where, among other initiatives, she was involved in the coordination of a project on coastal indicators in Latin America and the Regular Process for the UN Global Report and Assessment of the State of the Marine Environment. She has worked at the Vancouver Aquarium leading the implementation of the PollutionTracker project on the West Coast of Canada, and evaluating the presence of contaminants in marine sediments and their effects on biota. Currently, she leads several projects on marine litter and microplastics, as well as citizen science initiatives, participating in innovation projects. Carmen Morales is an active member of the Scientists Coalition for an Effective Plastic Treaty.
