Description

Rivers play an important role in transporting litter from inland to the sea. However, there are knowledge gaps that need to be filled in monitoring to understand this critical problem, the impacts on freshwater ecosystem communities, as well as to identify measures to prevent litter entering rivers.
At European and Mediterranean level, actions to integrate river basin to shore management, in some cases following ecosystem-based approaches, are the basis of a possible regulatory framework.

Objective of the session: To identify possible gaps in knowledge on the origin, monitoring methods and mitigation measures that can be applied to prevent riverine inputs of marine litter.

Programme

10:00/10:10. Introduction by María Cabrera (contextualisation of the problem of rivers as a source of marine litter).

10.10. María del Mar Canet Fernández, Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar, will tell us what measures are being carried out by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar, in terms of wastewater discharges from overflow points in rainfall episodes and rainwater runoff discharges.

10:20. Nuria Felis, Gandía Town Council, who will explain how they are minimising the entry of marine litter into their municipality.

10:30. Irina Makarenko, member of the UN Regular Process Group of Experts, will present the measures being taken in the rivers that flow into the Black Sea to minimise and investigate within the framework of rivers as a source of marine litter.

10:40. Andrea Rufo, Ecoalf Foundation, will talk about the “Clean Rivers, Save Oceans” project that is being carried out in Spain, with the aim of raising awareness, minimising and quantifying macro, meso and microplastics in rivers.

10:50. Rafael Carballeira, Researcher at the University of Valencia, will share his experience in the framework of the research “Plastic waste in lakes and reservoirs” (Nava et al., 2023).

11:00/11:45. Debate

11:45 – 12:00. Questions and Answers.
