Ric Sagarminaga, Ashoka fellow and cofounder of Alnitak has dedicated over four decades to the development of research and education programmes for the conservation of our natural and cultural maritime heritage. Ric has combined his passion for historical sailing boats with marine biology with the restoration of the Toftevaag, a 1907 Norwegian fishing boat that has become a flagship of conservation. On board Toftevaag over 4000 volunteers from 109 nations have worked hand in hand with researchers of the World’s top ocean research and education institutions. Ric is currently coordinator of LIFE OASIS, a project that focuses on marine litter adrift and very specially abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear.
